Reflecting on our 4 weeks away it's easy to be disappointed by the lousy weather we experienced particularly in Provence in the sunny south of France. However we saw many new places on this trip and took on some unique experiences along the way. Camping was not much fun in the bitter cold wind and rain but the freedom of the camper still allowed us to be flexible and stay longer when we wanted and push off if we'd had enough. We ticked off at least half a dozen of France's classified '100 most beautiful villages" and possibly saw a few more from the top 1000.
Staying in apartments was also new to us and we thoroughly enjoyed each one (2 X Amsterdam Jordaan, Paris Montmartre and Venice Dosoduro). The flexibility with meals, cooking your own market produce, nipping home early for a break if needed, no driving, no carrying luggage each day, living a little bit more like a local not just a visitor, the familiarity, using public transport - metros, trams, vaporettos. All these are great advantages. I originally made a typo and wrote straying in apartments... interpret as you wish.
