Uzes

We visited the smallish town of Uzes (pronounced oo-zezzz, not oozes or uzays) and on a farmers market day it was a highly enjoyable experience.  The Place Aux Herbes was buzzing with buyers and sellers. The produce ranged from fresh eggs, sheep and goat cheese, olives, fruit and veges, wines, cured meats (saucissons), fresh meat (pigs trotters etc.), plants, herbs, breads and also a few textiles and new age herbal remedies.

We planned our dinner and ended up with 3 types of sausage (pork, chilli and goats cheese) to go with the garlic - basil olives and  local potatoes.

The town is compact and full of charm in the usual European, narrow, cobble-stone laneway with welcoming shops – type of way.  Anyway we enjoyed a hot chocolate at one of  the cafes who employed a cheerful pony-tailed waiter who would call out instructions to “Craig or Greg” back in the bar and kitchen. This provided us with some cheap entertainment as we couldn’t make out the entire instructions but boy was  Craig or Greg quick in getting the orders organised.

During our stroll around the old town we  spied a tiny art space occupied by a local artist. Her exhibition consisted of a room full of tiny framed ceramic heads designed to match french expressions which contain the word "head". Just as in english there were many uses and she came up with a quirky collection of pieces. She was also very interested in our trip and so we had a lovely conversation about art, Australia, Provence, Rotterdam (where she had lived) and she also explained many of the expressions used in her works. I was happy to buy one of her pieces and could have bought a whole set.

Capalito is an animated mushroom with it's own kids movie currently showing at Uzes cinema. Why not?

  1. Must be almost time to pack up shop and head for Amsterdam, and just when the weather looks like it is getting better there (but not here). Weather is very wet in Sydney I believe.

BTW, Pip is writing up her application for the University of Perugia - gahhhh... all these overseas connections.

  2. Like all the white clothing hanging out for all to see- too bad if there is a big gust of wind that blows dust & dirt all over them ehh. Kinda looks like a uniform shop. Yep, near the end of another OS holiday for you but I'm sure all the rain will have cleared up by Wed? when you are home. I think all Sydneysiders will hope it does before then as there is a lot of localised flooding. xx PJ

  3. Argh how fantastic - Uzes! :) We got to meet with Joy and Mike who own the Uzes apartment and Mike mentioned the pavements/ cobble stones were systematically being replaced throughout the old part of town. He was hoping the area near the apartment would be completed by the time we get there. It all looks wonderful.

We had arranged to meet with Joy and MIke at The Lamrock Cafe in Bondi - but it's gone! Such an icon... Not long now until you return home. Savour every moment. Love Paul, Narelle, Sophie and Jack xxxx
